Learnings as the Founding Head of SUTT, BITS Pilani

My learnings from the time I built the best team of problem solvers, designers and future leaders in SUTT at BITS Pilani from ground up.

Building an Organization from Scratch

On June 15th, I officially stepped down as the Head of the Students’ Union Technical Team (SUTT) at BITS Pilani. As I look back, this journey feels less like a role I held and more like an experiment in leadership, responsibility, and community building.

What started as a small group of enthusiastic but inexperienced developers—with no active projects, no visibility, and frankly, no compelling reason for anyone to join—slowly transformed into a strong technical organization powering software used daily by over 5,000 students on campus.

Over the course of 450 days, we didn’t just build products. We built a team, a culture, and an ecosystem that valued ownership, quality, and long-term impact.

From Zero to Thirty

When we began, SUTT was little more than an idea. Today, it stands as a team of 30+ passionate developers and designers, spanning:

  • Web Development
  • Mobile App Development
  • UI/UX & Product Design

What made this journey meaningful wasn’t just scale—it was the intent. Every decision we made was guided by a simple question:

Does this genuinely make life easier for students?

What We Built

During my tenure, the team designed, developed, and deployed several campus-wide platforms:

  • Official Student Union Web Portal
  • Student Union Mobile App
  • Expenses Review System (ERS)
  • Official Sports Union Website
  • Students’ Union Technical Team Website

Each project was owned end-to-end by the team—from requirements and design to deployment and maintenance.

Flagship Platforms & Impact

Student Union Web Portal

We led the development of the Official Student Union Portal, a centralized platform built to bring transparency, autonomy, and efficiency to student governance.

Today, it is actively used by:

  • Clubs
  • Departments
  • Student bodies

for event signings, merchandise distribution, and administrative workflows—replacing fragmented and manual processes.

Student Union Mobile App

One of our proudest achievements was building the first cross-platform mobile app at BITS Pilani, using Flutter.

The Student Union App is now:

  • The highest-rated campus app
  • With 5,000+ downloads

It introduced:

  • Expense tracking
  • Event & merchandise signings
  • QR-based delivery and entry systems
  • Seamless cancellation workflows

This project redefined how mobile apps were approached and built on campus.

Sports Union Platform

We also designed and launched a new Sports Union website, focused on:

  • Managing sports inventory
  • Connecting with alumni
  • Publicizing sports activities and council initiatives

Looking Ahead

Even as I stepped down, the work was far from over. The team continues to build exciting new projects, and I’m especially proud to see the launch of the Students’ Union Technical Team website:

More than the software, what stays with me are the people—the late nights, tough decisions, moments of self-doubt, and the collective belief that we could build something meaningful.

Leading SUTT taught me how organizations are built—not through authority, but through trust, consistency, and shared ownership.

Till the end of time ❤
